Terashita Area of Hashikami Town

The Terashita area of Hashikami Town, Sannohe County, Aomori Prefecture, is an area centered around Terashita Kannon, which originates from Omotsu-ji Temple, which was founded over a period of five years starting in 724. Since Futsunushi no Mikoto was enshrined in the Kannon Hall in 1186, it has long been revered as a sacred place of syncretic Shinto and Buddhism.

Terashita Kannon was established in 1743 and is the first temple of the "Oshu-Nanbu-Nukanobu Thirty-Three Kannon Temples", a sacred area of Kannon worship stretching from present-day eastern Aomori Prefecture to northern Iwate Prefecture. It is visited by many worshippers.

Hashikami Town is also known as the "home of giant trees" because of the large number of giant and ancient trees estimated to be between 800 and 1,000 years old. Of the giant and ancient trees introduced on the Hashikami Town website, four are located at Terashita Kannon and Ushioyama Shrine.
In addition, there are rows of cedar trees along the approach to the shrine, as well as a variety of other trees such as ginkgo, fir, horse chestnut, katsura, and Japanese walnut. It is a place rich in nature, where you can find rock trout in the mountain streams and see fireflies in the summer.

In recent years, it has been incorporated into the Sanriku Fukko National Park and is also part of the Michinoku Coastal Trail, and is gaining more and more attention every year.
